Matsui Sensu Kobo Teams Up with the Tokyo Tokyo Brand to Create New Edo Sensu Folding Fan

Matsui Sensu Kobo, an Edogawa Collection partner, has collaborated with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s “Tokyo Tokyo” brand to produce a new Edo sensu (folding fan).

The new design, titled Edo Sensu Seigaiha (Tokyo Tokyo Version), features seigaiha—a classic Japanese komon pattern of stylized ocean waves associated with good fortune—as a motif to express hopes for peace and stability. On the reverse side, the fan is adorned with hand-drawn kasumibiki, a traditional technique that evokes layers of soft mist. While retaining the clean, minimal silhouette characteristic of Edo sensu, the design also brings in modern touches to reflect a sense of openness and evolution.

“Edo sensu were created by craftspeople during the Edo period and are still handmade today. Tokyo may be one of the world’s leading megacities, but I hope more people come to know that it’s also a cultural capital where the refined handcraft traditions unique to Japan continue to thrive in modern, evolving forms,” says Matsui Hiroshi of Matsui Sensu Kobo.

The fan makes an ideal gift for international visitors to Tokyo or a memorable souvenir of your own adventures in the city. Be sure to take the chance to experience the enduring charm of Edo sensu for yourself.

The Edo Sensu Seigaiha (Tokyo Tokyo Version) is available at the Shinozaki Bunka Plaza, Edogawa City’s antenna shop Edomachi, Tokyo Tokyo’s antenna shop, and various online stores.
